93 Points, 2014. This bone dry, mineral-rich wine will start conversations and pair well with lots of fish and shellfish. Racy acidity, a tangy texture and light but bracing body are its hallmarks. Built for further aging, it should drink best from 2025–2035. Cellar Selection.
93 Points, 2014. A new cuvée from Iron Horse, this references Dom Pérignon, the Champenois monk, whom 19th century copywriters credited with the exclamation, “Come quickly—I am drinking stars.” When in 2022 the James Webb telescope transmitted images of the birth of stars in a distant nebula, Iron Horse decided to release 1,500 magnums of this limited-edition wine. A bright coastal sparkler based on their estate grown Chardonnay (75 percent, the balance Pinot Noir), this has a starry glimmer of salt-crystal minerality over luscious textural richness, developed over long aging on the lees. Bring on the Tomales Bay oysters.
… a mature wonder that still has time left to continue evolving. Jasmine flowers and nectarines mingle with mushrooms and cardamom, and with some time in the glass, rye toast and apricots emerge. Taut acidity vibrates from start to finish, lending excellent freshness even so many years after the vintage. Also of note is the gorgeous label, which features the famous image of the Carina Nebula that the James Webb Space Telescope captured: This is a statement bottle, as is the liquid inside. 2014 Vintage.
TASTING NOTES
Aromas of fresh grapefruit and toasted almonds. This wine has lively tiny bubbles that rise up to create a perfect crown. Bright citrus notes on the front palate, ripe figs, persimmon and lime curd, on the mid palate with a gorgeous creamy finish.
VINEYARD NOTES
Location. Location. Location. Our proximity to the ocean in cool, foggy Green Valley yields a very distinctive style of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, especially for Sparkling.
WINEMAKER NOTES
Hand harvested in the early morning, our Chardonnay and Pinot grapes are gently pressed as whole clusters yielding base wines of great delicacy. The juice ferments slowly at 62° to 65° f retaining vibrant fruit esters. In blending this wine we chose Chardonnay lots that were a bit shy by nose and which had lean and angular elements by mouth, knowing how the base wine would evolve. What was once shy now exhibits wonderful complexity, elegance and creaminess that comes from 7 plus years aging on the yeast. The dosage is 6 ml Brut LEX, 12 ml 2020 Audrey Chardonnay.
Lighter than air, puffed up high and golden brown, it’s center still soft and molten, this is a swoon worthy dish to pair with Joy!
