Our Ocean Conservation and Commitment to Sustainability

by Joy Sterling | Published March 21, 2025

In celebration of World Water Day on March 22 and Earth Day on April 22, Iron Horse Vineyards is proud to announce Heal the Bay as this year’s beneficiary of our annual contributions to ocean conservation.

Heal the Bay is a Southern California environmental organization dedicated to safeguarding our coastal waters and watersheds — and right now, they’re focused on mitigating ocean damage in the aftermath of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires through their “Ash to Action” initiative. We are honored to support their work by contributing a portion of the proceeds from every bottle of our vintage Ocean Reserve Blanc de Blancs Sparkling Wine ($62) to this critical cause.

The current release of Ocean Reserve marks 20 years of supporting leading organizations committed to ocean health. Over the years, our contributions have helped power the work of National Geographic, Mission Blue — founded by renowned marine biologist Sylvia Earle to protect marine areas around the globe — the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, and, most recently, the Surfrider Foundation, championing coastal protection efforts.

Each year, we select a new beneficiary, with contributions averaging $45 per case of Ocean Reserve. This year’s partnership with Heal the Bay allows us not only to advance marine conservation but also to support a community hurting in the wake of climate disasters. We believe protecting the ocean goes hand-in-hand with supporting people who depend on it.

My family’s focus on the ocean runs deep. It’s the driver of the special microclimate that allows us to produce Sparkling Wines with the finesse and elegance for which Iron Horse is known. I am proud to serve on the California Coastal Conservancy, the lead state agency on climate adaptation, and to bring those values home to our work in the vineyard and beyond.

Closer to home, we are also committed to protecting and restoring the environment right here in Sonoma County. My brother has been leading a years-long project to restore the coho salmon habitat in Green Valley Creek, which runs through our estate. This summer, we expect to break ground on habitat restoration efforts that will create refuge areas where floodwaters can be stored and then released when needed by the fish. This effort is entirely for the benefit of wildlife — Iron Horse uses only recycled water for irrigation in the vineyards.

We are thrilled to announce this new partnership in time for Earth Month celebrations and invite you to join us in raising a glass of Ocean Reserve — drinking beautifully and doing good, all at once.
